useful posting here. How do i acquire a transition pack CD? I need to convert sbs to standard server to enable Terminal Server. Does the transition pack come within a retail box? Thanks m8

I have a client with SBS 2003 Premium.  They have only the Server and SQL installed.  They are a non-profit and can get Microsoft Software at extremely discounted prices through techsoup.org.  Unfortunately, techsoup doesn't sell the Transition Pack and the cost of the Premium Transition Pack is too high to swing.  Can they purchase the Standard Transition Pack to "undo" the SBS locked down features, then purchase, through Techsoup, the SQL server and CAL's?  In other words, will the Standard Transition Pack unlock the premium SBS?

As you said there is very limited information on the SBS 2003 R2 transition pack.

I just wanted to confirm that you definitely have to upgrade SBS 2003 to R2 before applying the SBS R2 transition pack and also is there a way (since i have purchased the transition pack) to temporarily increase the user cals on SBS 2003

I have already purchased the SBS 2003 R2 Prem Transition pack and the necessary CALS reason for doing this is that i already have 75 users logging onto my network and have another 10 starting work soon that need access to the network

My current SBS 2003 Prem server does not have any service packs or R2 software installed. So i needed to know if i could just install the R2 transition pack on my current setup? or do i have to upgrade the my server to R2 first then run the transition pack?

Yes you can transition from SP1 to R2 with the R2 transition pack.  The install runs without any problems.  Users may want to purchase an SBS R2 upgrade to stay in good standing for the licensing of premium products since the versions changed.  For some reason, a lot of people ask this question and there is a lot of confusion.

areu sure I can transit from SBS SP1 to windows standard 2003 r2? I want to confirm this before purchasng the sbs r2 transition pack.  Also, is it a MUST I purchase sbs 2003 r2 upgrade before i can transition to windows 2003 r2? if it works, then why do I have to buy the upgrade? Also, are there significant differences btw server 2003 sp2 and server 2003 r2?

Right,  been though all the options.

I have 2 sets of SBS with in the company.   When we merged we decomissioned the SBS server (Standard) and just kept using the SBS (premium).  Both are OEM products.

If I grab the transition pack,   do I have to keep running Exchange, ISA and Windows on the same server, because it is an OEM?  Or do I get to move things about?  *confused*

Change of plan,

I'm going to buy a new server,  put SBS2003 R2 Standard FPP on it.  Migrate all over to that.  Then run the transition pack.

Then I'll have a redundant SBS servers in my cupbord gathering dust,  but full licences for:  FFP, Exchange, Share Point Services, and windows 2003 (all 2003 R2)

I'll be able to put some old Server 2000 licence on the hardware eventually and use the old server as a test platorm.  

The next step will be upgrading to get Exchange 2007 Server 2008.  Since we're costing this now,  for the end of the year.  I have no idea of the best upgrade path from:

Old SBS 2003 severs Premium,  (that we don't use the premium features of)

To Windows 2008 Domain,  running exchange 2007.

Am I right in thinking if I have a SBS 2003 server with 20 OEM CALS and purchase a new server with SBS 2003 R2 with30  OEM CALS I can use the transition pack on the old server and join it to the new SBS domain and just run it as a file server without buying additional CALS?

Hey we are planning to upgrade an sbs 2003 server and have purchased the transition pack.

We have purchased a new server and plan to migrate Exchange over to its own server, in saying that i need to first install exchange 2003 on the new server before i can seperate and migrate the exchange data.

we didnt get an exchange cd with the transition pack, so im wonder do i need to purchase exchange as well? I just not sure what ot use to install exchange on the new server when all i have is the transition pack and the original sbs install cds..

any advice would be great

We are planning to use the transition pack to break out of our current SBS2003 R2 Premium setup.  We only use Sharepoint (which i think uses SQL), do i have to buy CALs for Sharepoint or SQL on top of my transition CALs?
