Susan Bradley's found something that does good backup and virtualisation things - StorageCraft

Susan's blog has recently come under my radar again (meaning I have time to read blogs), so I am posting lots of things from here.  This one is a product which if your customer is DR minded could enable them to spawn a Virtual PC/Server and run the backup in it.  An awesome addition.

He took a backup image he had done of a server, he then fired up virtual pc and restored the backed up "real" server to a virtual one and flagging the "check for hardware changes and deal with it automatically" function that the IT pro version does.  Very impressive and very cool.  You can even mount the image and browse a read only version of the server if you need to extract data or what not.

Check it out... very cool.

Just thought echo the first comment on Susans post... Backup Exec System Recovery (formerly LiveState Recovery) has had this functionality for 3+ years... They have a small business version which is reasonably priced and we've been using it for the last 18 months

Andy,

When I look at www.pugh.co.uk/.../backupexec-systemrecoveryserver.htm there is no mention of "restore to a Virtual PC or Virtual Server and make it just work" - is that a feature of the product?

thanks

David

Yes it's a feature

"Recover to dissimilar hardware or virtual environments with the Restore Anyware technology"

from

www.symantec.com/.../features.jsp

When it was LiveState Recovery the "restore anyware" feature was optional...but then it all got rebranded to System Recovery and it's part of the package now

The latest version (7) got UI revamp as well...on the Tools menu you now have the "Convert to Virtual Disk" option. It supports VMware .vmdk and Virtual PC/Server .vhd where as before i think it was a seperate utility

Hope that helps!
