i got problem when i use MS office.i got the error "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked" in Word 2007 .

Where should I get the authorization code? Also, I'm a bit puzzled because I was able to use Microsoft Word for three months without having to authorize it, since the dialog box said it wasn't necessary; why is this causing problems now?

I have this same problem.  I'm on the "resources" tab, but I can't choose anything other than that, including activating Word.  Is there another way I can activate it?

Actually, there are multiple reasons why a document might say this at the bottom:

1) You are using a trial, or unactivated version of Word

2) As described in the post, some portion of the document may be protected

3) And this one took me a while... [Office Button] -> Prepare menu has a "Mark as Final" option that makes a document Read Only. If this has been done, there is an icon in the Status Bar (to the right of the Word Count) that says "Marked as Final" when you hover over it. To undo, just go back to the Prepare menu as select the "Mark as Final" option again.

I downloaded a 2007 MIcrosoft Word Office and Student trial a couple of weeks ago, and today, it said "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked". Luckily I had a different computer which I could do my work on. I tried following the steps but almost every command was unavailable (the names were grey and i couldnt click on them). I cant click protect document or anything.

I'm having the same problem as everyone else here, but I retained my office word 2007 with the hack thats going around. But a week later, I got "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked'. I don't want to go out and buy it, so what will the activation do?

I am having the problem. I have activated it, am stuck on the "Resources" tab, and cannot do anything involving Word through Outlook. I am using a full version that I purchased, and have used all the solutions here, none have helped. What can I do to solve this?

I had the same problem about a month after i bought my new laptop. I ended up inserting the microsoft cd that came with the shipment and it activated immediately. The product key is on the back of the cd case. Hope this helps!

I looked at loads of articles on the web and most responses to the locking question pointed to the product registration, or re-install. After doing all of that, still didn't work.

Ended up being the security settings on the applications. All i needed to do was to go to the properties window of word and then from the security tab, give full / write control to the users listed.

I have the same problem as a few other people here. It says "This modification (blah blah)". Hence, I can't type. SO, when I go into Word, it says: "The command cannot be performed because a dialogue box is open. Click OK, and then close the dialogue boxes to continue."

I clicked okay. Then it says that I need to Convert. So I clicked that button. That takes me to Enter Product Key, or Buy Product Key Online. I have the product key, so clicked the first one.

Okay, here's what frustrates me: I have entered the Product Key Number, like, a bazillion times! I click okay, then Install, it says "Configuring", then is says "Microsoft Office Home and Student Trial configuration has completed successfully. Close and restart all open Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 applications to allow setup changes to take effect. You will be prompted to activate your software when its restarted."

So I do that. I even restarted my computer. But when I go back onto Word, the whole thing starts over again! I even went to Word Options, Activate. But it does the same thing!

What's going on? Please, please help!

Thank you so much Deb for the above post! Everyone try that, I had the same problem as most - had downloaded and activated the trial and still had the error, just went into the properties and security tabs like she said and reopened microsoft word and voila! Ta very much :)

Okay all you have to do is go to the first pic (as shown above) and in resources activate microsoft office, then it will prompt u to close the programme, then re-start word and VOILA! it works

You must reinstall Microsoft Office to phase out the error message. I had the same issue & wants i did that i never saw the error meesage pop up again.

This happened for me, too. i was stuck on the resources tab.

I activated it, still didn't work. Frustration continued.

but then i closed and re-opened it and i could type. hope this helps someone.

i had this laptop... it's new and the first day i bought i couldn't use the powerpoint and microsoft word because it's locked...

What happened to me was I entered my Product Key, and it said "activated", then I tried typing and it said "This modification is not allowed because the section is locked" so then I was a bit annoyed, so then I went to Word Options > Resources > activate Microsoft Office, then I put the Product Key in again - it came up with "activated". Then this morning I came back on, opened Microsoft Office, then something came up - "How would you like to complete activating your software?" then there were two options - "Activate by internet (Recommended)" and "Activate by phone". I chose "Activate by internet (Recommended)" and it activated once I set up my internet. Then I closed down Microsoft Word 2007, and set it up again - It works!

i have microsoft office home and student 2007, it worked fine then the message 'this modification is not allowed because the selection is locked,' i then activated my version of the cd which i had not origionally done. however nothing has changed and the problem is still occuring.. i can click across from 'home' across to 'view' tabs, but cannot select anything within the tabs. :| which i dont understand.

I have absolutely no idea why it is doing this. There is no text to lock, and all of the buttons are grayed out, and on the word options sub-menu, i cannot change tabs. Can you tell me how to unlock the system so I can write? Please help.

I had a Control Control that I couldn't delete. The solution for me was to open the Developer tab, click the 'Properties' button and uncheck the option labelled 'Content control cannot be deleted'.

I went to the web site suggested by Gaurav.  Didn't help my case.  I quess there are many reasons for getting this error message.   I tried to use the security solution but my Word properties does not have a security tab.  However, it gave me an idea.  I went into the properties of the Office folder (that holds all the programs in the suite) and found the Read Olny selected.  I took it off--was asked if I wanted it off for all folders.  I said yes, Applied, OK.  Went into Word and I was able to type.  

I hope this helps someone.  I know how frustrating this can be.

I was a bit confused about what "properties section of the Office folder" meant, and as I was tinkering around for a few seconds to figure it out, I found it.

Close Word. RIGHT-CLICK on the "Microsoft Office" folder on your computer (somewhere under Program Files usually, etc.). Select "Properties". DE-SELECT "Read Only". Re-open Word.

Maybe yours will be working, as was mine at this point...? :~)

All these solutions never seem to work for me. When i re-check the properties dialog box they do not take effect and the read only tab remain the same. I have been using this version now for quite some time and i never had the problem.

Just wait a few minutes and then reopen and it will be fine if you activated
