Hyper-V Security and Management from Windows 7

I’ve seen two Hyper-V announcements this week.  One is about the new Security Guide and the other is how to manage Hyper-V from Windows 7.

Hyper-V Management from Windows 7

This is something that caught me out.  The Hyper-V Management tools for Vista do not load on Windows 7, but tools have been published.  Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=7d2f6ad7-656b-4313-a005-4e344e43997d and install this.  Then go to the Windows Features tool in Control Panel and find the Role Administration Tools.  Select Hyper-V Tools from there and bob is your uncle.

If you download the amdx64 version it should work on your 64-bit system.

Nah. Doesn't work on x6x version on 64bit Windows 7.

All I get on the Hyper-V manager is  'Access denied. Unable to establish communication between x and x"

I would double check the settings.  I used this on my x64 version of Windows 7.

First try to access the computer like start, run, \\servername\c$ and use administrator credentials... that will open an connection and give you the administrator rights. Then check Hyper-V Manager.

x64 version works great with win7 x64

I ran into the access denied error as well on a fresh win 7 pro install.  found this solution:

It doesn't work for Windows 7 Home edition, maybe that's why it doesn't work? Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 can be installed on computers that are running the Enterprise, Professional, or Ultimate editions of Windows 7.
